Hair spray or aerosol fixative used for pastels or chalk drawings.Cups or bowls large enough to cover the mushrooms.Mature mushrooms ready to drop their spores. The spores generally drop close to the mushroom, but can be carried to other places by the wind or by animals. For mushrooms like morels and false morels, and those belonging to Ascomycetes, the spore print may also have prints around the mushroom as well as underneath. It shows the color of the mushroom spores if viewed en masse. It is an important diagnostic character in most handbooks for identifying mushrooms. When you remove the cup and lift the mushroom cap. When the mushroom ages, it begins to drop its spores. The spore print is the powdery deposit obtained by allowing spores of a fungal fruit body to fall onto a surface underneath. While some spore prints can appear within a few hours, its often best to wait overnight, just to be sure. Mushrooms, the fruiting bodies of fungi, carry millions of spores in a wide variety of ways, some of which include: on the underside of the mushroom cap or gills or in tubes, on spines, pores, or wrinkled surfaces of the mushroom, enclosed in fruiting bodies (puffballs) or in a saclike structure (flask, cup, brain or sponge fungi). What is a spore? A spore is the ‘seed’ of the fungus and is the means with which the fungus reproduces. Try and keep things as sterile as possible during the whole process. Heres what I do: take a mushroom, maybe an ugly or damaged one, cut off the stem at the cap, and put it down on a sheet of black. Making a spore print is a fun way to learn about how a mushroom propagates (spreads its spores), assist you in identifying the mushroom and a creative way to make mushroom art. Make sure you have a mature mushroom (no veil), which is as fresh as possible.

In this activity, you are going to collect the spores from your mushroom in a spore print.
